What is the difference between vent free and vented gas logs?
Vent free gas logs can be operated in a zero clearance woodburning fireplace with a chimney attached with the damper shut and are designed to be a decorative heater and is not vented to the outdoors.

Vented gas logs are a decorative appliance that is to be burnt in a woodburning fireplace with the damper open and are not designed to be a heater. There will be some heat realized but they have no efficiency rating.

I recommend that installation be done by a qualified gas professional. But the log sets are packaged with detailed instructions for assembly in a fireplace with a pre-existing gas connection. Many localities require installation of any gas appliance to be performed by a professional. Please check with your local inspection agency/department.

Why do I need to purchase a safety pilot control for my LP gas log set?
LP gas is heavier than air and tends to collect in low spots, rather than exhausting up the chimney flue. Furthermore, LP gas can go unnoticed until a significant quantity has gathered, creating a potential hazard. Installing a safety pilot control will ensure that gas cannot accidentally pass through the burner when not operating and will eliminate the risk of such an occurrence. The safety pilot control also ensures a proper ignition of the LP gas.

Will I have to re-light the pilot light every time I use my log set?
No. The pilot is kept in operation through a device called a thermocouple which as long as it is operating, the pilot can continue to stay on consistently during your use period. In the event of thermocouple failure, the fail safe (safety valve) will close the gas off to the pilot and the burner. Service should be done by a trained hearth technician.

Is the black soot on my gas logs normal?
It is normal for black soot (or carbon) to build up on logs with a vented burner. Most noticeable with LP gas. If you have an over-excessive amount of soot or carbon buildup on your vented gas logs, check your instruction manual for the correct position of your logs.

In the case of a vent free gas log, black soot (or carbon) buildup is not normal. It is suggested that you consult with either our customer service department or your local hearth technician. You may also check your instruction manual for the correct log positions.

How can I clean by gas log set?
I recommend that you use the Anti-Creo-Soot spray found on our website to remove the black soot (carbon) buildup on your vented gas logs. (Not to be used a birch model gas log set.)

If your logs are vent free, consult your owner's manual/installation guide if black soot (carbon) appears.

Can I burn real wood with my gas logs?
No. You will damage the gas logs and/or gas log burner set when you burned a real wood fire thus voiding any warranty provided by the manufacturer.

Why do my gas logs have a whistling sound?
This is caused by using a corrogated gas connector which slows down the rate of gas and causes the logs to whistle. Use the flexible aluminum connector contained within the gas log kit.
